San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer won’t sign a resolution passed by the City Council that opposes the proposed border wall, but he won’t veto it, either, his office said Wednesday.

The resolution passed the City Council Tuesday on a 5-3 vote, with Republican members Chris Cate, Mark Kersey and Lorie Zapf opposed. The panel’s fourth GOP member, Scott Sherman, was absent, but his spokesman said he also would have dissented.

The resolution not only opposes the wall, but also expresses an intent to divest from firms involved in the project.

“Mayor Faulconer has been clear in his opposition to a border wall across the entirety of the U.S. southern border but will not join on to this resolution because it also includes language that could blacklist businesses based on the political leanings of the City Council majority,” said spokeswoman Christina DiLeva Chadwick. “This sets an unfair precedent and is a distraction from the very real and immediate issues facing the city of San Diego right now.”

Zapf was the one dissenting council member to speak on the resolution. She said the majority was engaging in “political posturing.”
