Assemblyman Rocky Chavez, R-Oceanside, was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to be chairman of the Governor’s Military Council, while Edward Hanlon Jr. of Carlsbad was kept as vice chairman.

Chavez, 66, replaces former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher in the role. Brown announced the appointments late Wednesday.

The 28-year Marine veteran has previously served on the Oceanside City Council and was undersecretary at the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

Hanlon was a Marine for 39 years, rising to lieutenant general. Among his duties, he was the commanding officer of Camp Pendleton and was a U.S. representative to the NATO Military Committee.

He’s now the president of the defense consulting firm Transatlantic Insights LLC.

Members of the council work to enhance the state’s position as a leader in the country’s military planning, while protecting the 30 or so bases in California from budget cuts.

Both are Republicans. Neither position requires Senate confirmation, and there is no compensation.
