Rep. Scott Peters joined 40 lawmakers from both parties in calling on Congress to reject President Trump’s border wall and pass a spending bill to keep the government open.
The “Problem Solvers Caucus” called Monday for a clean spending bill “without any ideological riders” to keep the government open after Friday night.
The biggest ideological rider is Trump’s call for border wall funding, though he indicated late Monday he may be willing to wait on that.
Peters has been one of the most vocal opponents of President Trump’s border wall.
“The border wall is a bad idea and a waste of money. There are much more efficient ways to secure the border without damaging trade and border communities,” Peters said.
“Congress has been working for months on a bipartisan agreement to fund the government and make investments that create jobs and keep America safe,” he added. “This last minute attempt to hamstring these negotiations to President Trump’s border wall is a good way to go backwards and risk shutting down the government.”
Peters represents the 52nd District of California, which covers much of central San Diego County including Poway, Coronado, and large portions of the City of San Diego.
