Gov. Jerry Brown’s office announced Saturday that he will undergo a second round of treatment for prostate cancer later this winter.

Dr. Eric Small, Brown’s oncologist at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, said the governor’s prognosis is excellent.

“Fortunately this is not extensive disease, can be readily treated with a short course of radiotherapy, and there are not expected to be any significant side effects,” Small said. “The prognosis for Governor Brown is excellent.”

Brown, 78, will continue his full work schedule during the treatment, which is expected to occur between late February and early March.

He originally sought treatment five years ago for a localized prostate cancer. The governor has also been treated for skin cancer twice in the past nine years.
