Groundbreaking is scheduled Sunday for a 2.25-mile stretch of the Bayshore Bikeway, the bicycle loop around San Diego Bay.
The new path will run along East Harbor Drive from Vesta Street to the intersection of Marina Way and W. 32nd Street, according to the San Diego Association of Governments, which will oversee the project.
Currently, around 15 miles of the 24-mile planned bikeway is completed, and the new project will fill in one of the gaps. The remaining nine miles can be traversed by taking city streets, according to SANDAG, the regional planning agency.
SANDAG estimated the stretch will be completed next summer.
