UC San Diego students are ramping up efforts to register new voters and make it easy for them to cast ballots on election day.
The nonpartisan Student Organized Voter Access Committee has a goal of registering 4,000 students by the California deadline of Oct. 24.
The committee has registered more than 1,400 students since move-in weekend in mid-September, and has been making additional efforts through tabling, outreach events and debate parties. A door-to-door registration drive is scheduled for next week.
Efforts will culminate with a “Voterpalooza” event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 24 on Library Walk in one last push to register as many students as possible.
“All students, new and returning, need to make sure they are properly registered to vote because it’s important to register every time you change your address,” said Liam Barrett, a political science major and the committee’s executive director.
“We are trying to stress that students cannot only have a voice in the presidential election, but they are likely to have a big influence on state and local races,” he added.
On election day, Nov. 8, there will be eight polling places on campus, and an election night viewing party is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Great Hall on campus.
