The race in the 52nd Congressional District heated up this week with Rep. Scott Peters releasing his first TV ad and challenger Denise Gitsham getting House Speaker Paul Ryan‘s endorsement.

Peters, a Democrat who is seeking re-election to his third term, appears in the ad with college students to promote his advocacy of making college more affordable and easing the burden of student loan debt.

“I’m Scott Peters. This is personal to me. My dad was a minister. My mom, a secretary. Like most, I needed loans to afford college,” he says in the ad.

Gitsham, a Republican who is seeking her first elected office, received Ryan’s endorsement on Monday.

“As the daughter of immigrants and with a tremendous record of accomplishment, Denise Gitsham is the living embodiment of the American dream. As a small business owner, Denise knows what it takes to grow the economy and increase opportunities for all San Diegans,” Ryan said. “I’m glad to endorse Denise Gitsham‘s campaign for Congress.”

Gitsham, who worked in the George W. Bush White House, owns a local public relations company.

The 52nd District encompasses Coronado, La Jolla, much of the city of San Diego and Poway.
