Any doubts about Nathan Fletcher being a true-blue Democrat have evaporated — at least in the 51st Congressional District.

The former Assembly member who switched from Republican to independent in 2012 and then to Democrat in 2013 was the top male vote-getter Sunday in a Hillary Clinton caucus to pick delegates for the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

According to unofficial results provided by county party chair Francine Busby, the 51st District caucus also picked Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez. The former Labor Council leader was the No. 2 woman — behind Martha Garcia of Brawley.

Busby herself was the top female vote-getter at a Clinton caucus in the 49th District, which takes in southern Orange County and northern San Diego County.

In separate Bernie Sanders and Clinton caucuses statewide, slates were chosen in boy-girl-boy-girl fashion (or girl-boy-girl-boy). The June 7 primary will decide how many Sanders and Clinton delegates will attend the July 25-28 convention from each of California’s 53 congressional districts.

Fletcher went on to work at Qualcomm and teach political science at UC San Diego after his failed bid for San Diego mayor, but he’s become active in Democratic Party causes. As a top vote-getter, he’s likely to land a seat at the Wells Fargo Center when Democrats nominate a candidate for the White House.

Jim Boydston, top male vote-getter in the 52nd District Sanders caucus, provided names of fellow Bernie delegates in the 51st and 53rd districts.

The top male in the 53rd (with 229 votes) was Jose Caballero, a San Diego City Council challenger to Scott Sherman in the 7th District.

At least two married couples are potential convention-goers. In the 49th District, Joanne and James Mickelson of Carlsbad are Sanders delegates. In the 50th, Diane and Michael Summers of Fallbrook are pledged to Clinton.

The state Democratic Party is still getting results back and reviewing them, party communications director Michael Soller said Tuesday, adding: “We’ll be posting within the next two weeks.”
