San Diego City Councilman and former Interim Mayor Todd Gloria on Wednesday threw his support behind Georgette Gomez for the District 9 council seat.
“Georgette Gomez is a leader who has dedicated her life to making a difference in San Diego. She has taken on special interests, stood up to corporate polluters, and been a committed advocate for neighborhoods,” Gloria said. ”
“I have no doubt that Georgette will bring a fresh perspective to city hall and ensure that the needs of our neighborhoods always come first,” he added.
Gloria represented large parts of District 9 prior to redistricting in 2014, and his endorsement is expected to be influential with many voters. Gomez has also been endorsed by Assemblywoman Toni Atkins and City Councilman David Alvarez.
“I am deeply honored to earn Councilman Gloria’s support. Todd has been a champion for our neighborhoods, authoring the increase in San Diego’s minimum wage and fighting tirelessly to fix city streets in neglected communities,” Gomez said.
District 9, which stretches from San Diego State University to Southcrest, is currently represented by Marti Emerald, who has chosen not to run for a third term on the council.
Also in the running for the seat are Emerald’s chief of staff, Ricardo Flores, lawyer Araceli Martinez, and taxi driver union head Sarah Saez.
