The historic Silverado Ballroom, one of the city’s few Art Deco buildings, reopened Wednesday after renovation efforts spanning nearly two decades.
“We’re celebrating today a slice of San Diego history,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer at a ceremony on the historic dance floor. “We honor our past as we continue to move forward.”
The building at the corner of Euclid and University avenues opened in 1931 and was popular during the big band era. It’s located directly across the street from another landmark, the Euclid Tower.
“As soon as the word spreads through this community, we’re going to see this hall rocking with music,” said City Councilmember Marti Emerald, in whose district the building is located.
The $1.62 million renovation was financed with the help of the San Diego Revolving Loan Fund, a successor to redevelopment funding.
The ballroom is on the second floor. A Chinese restaurant and other businesses will be located on the ground floor. Owner David Chau said he had been working for over 15 years to restore the building.
