Assemblyman Rocky Chavez announced Monday he’s dropping his longshot bid for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer.
Chavez, a retired Marine colonel who represents coastal San Diego from Encinitas to the Orange County line, said he would focus on his reelection to the 76th District Assembly seat.
He was far behind the front-running Democrat, state Attorney General Kamala Harris, in polls and fundraising. Another Democrat, Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Graden Grove, is second in polling.
His departure leaves two Republicans in the race, Duf Sundheim and Tom Del Beccaro.
