Rep. Scott Peters picked up an early re-election endorsement Wednesday from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the political arm of the national women’s health organization.

Peters, a Democrat, has championed support for Planned Parenthood at a time when Republicans nationally are trying to eliminate any federal funding for the organization over opposition to abortion.

“Planned Parenthood provides affordable reproductive and preventative health care to millions of American women and men — birth control and services that reduce healthcare costs in the long run,” said Peters. “It’s astonishing to me that some members of Congress don’t understand this very basic math.”

Darrah DiGiorgio Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest, said Peters “continuously stands up against attacks to block patients from accessing essential care at Planned Parenthood, to ban abortion, and roll back insurance coverage for birth control.”

Peters is a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus and currently serves on the House Armed Services and Judiciary Committees. He and his wife, Lynn Gorguze, are long-time supporters of Planned Parenthood.

Peters is running for his third term representing the 52 District, which includes Coronado, La Jolla, large parts of the City of San Diego, and Poway.
