Two Democratic members of San Diego’s Congressional delegation praised President Obama’s final State of the Union address Tuesday for appealing to the American spirit and countering “defeatist rhetoric” that has dominated politics.
Rep. Susan Davis said the President’s speech appealed to America’s “better angels” and harnessed the American spirit.
“As we look to the future, the President encouraged us to enlist our better angels and harness the spirit of America that has served us so well throughout our history,” said Davis, who represents the 53rd District. “The president reminded us that we have been through tough economic times and prevailed.”
Rep. Scott Peters said Obama’s focus on “a brighter future” is more representative of America “than the defeatist rhetoric” from many political candidates.
“President Obama’s message of national confidence and working together towards a brighter future is much more representative of the American spirit than the defeatist rhetoric that we have heard from so many political candidates,” said Peters, who represents the 52nd District.
“I echo President Obama’s calls to tackle gun violence, climate change, and college affordability, and share his belief that in order to do so we must fix a broken Congress and a political system that is overly influenced by money,” he added.
