Marshall Merrifield will be sworn in Thursday evening as chairman of the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners in a public event at the USS Midway Museum.
The businessman, who succeeds Dan Malcolm, will make remarks on what he sees ahead for the port in 2016. The agency is in the planning stages for three developments that could result in future large-scale projects at the Chula Vista Marina, Harbor Island and Seaport Village.
Merrifield is president and CEO of Bluewave Security, which manufactures high-tech equipment for video and door-access surveillance. He was one of two commissioners representing the city of San Diego whose 2013 appointments were vetoed by then-Mayor Bob Filner, who objected to the selection process.
He and the other appointee, Rafael Castellanos, took office a couple months later after the City Attorney’s Office and state legislative counsel issued opinions that Filner didn’t have the authority to veto the appointment.
The free, public event will begin at 7 p.m. at the museum at 910 North Harbor Drive. A limited amount of free public parking will be available in the adjacent lot on Navy Pier.
