With the strong smell of new asphalt in the air, city officials gathered in Allied Gardens Tuesday to celebrate re-surfacing one of the worst neighborhood streets in San Diego.
Cracked and pothole-strewn Allied Road — located between Mission Gorge Road and Greenbrier Avenue — now has a smooth, new surface of asphalt.
“This is an example of the type of road work we’ll see across the city as we repair 1,000 miles of streets,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer. “This year’s budget doubled the amount of road repair we’re doing annually so neighborhoods like Allied Gardens will have smoother, safer streets.”
In 2011, Allied Road received an rating of just 7.45 on the city’s 0-to-100 index of street condition.
Councilman Scott Sherman, who represents the neighborhood, called the street was “by far the worst road in District 7” and said he had been trying for three years to get it resurfaced.
“This repair of Allied Road was a top priority for me when I first took office,” Sherman said. “It is exciting to finally see work begin on this important project.”
