San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has endorsed Ray Ellis for the District 1 City Council seat that will be vacated by Sherri Lightner after 2016.

“We’re getting our city back on track. And Ray will help me keep San Diego on the right path. Please join me in supporting Ray Ellis for City Council,” said Faulconer in a video endorsement posted Wednesday on the candidate’s site.

Ellis, a small business owner and non-profit leader, is making his second bid to represent La Jolla, University City and Carmel Valley. He ran unsuccessfully against Lightner in 2012.

“I am so honored to have the Mayor’s support,” said Ellis, who like Faulconer is a Republican, though the election is non-partisan.

Ellis will face entrepreneur and community leader Barbara Bry in the 2016 primary.
