One San Diego, a non-profit founded by Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his wife, distributed 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to low-income students in Barrio Logan on Wednesday.

The nonprofit, which is co-chaired by by Faulconer’s wife, Katherine Stuart, and former City Council President Tony Young, partnered with the Marlow B. Martinez Foundation to help K-8 students in the tradtionally Hispanic neighborhood near downtown San Diego.

“Though many of our students come from lower-income households, their potential is exceptional, and our mission is to give them every opportunity to succeed. These backpacks bring a smile to school children’s faces, and help relieve their families’ financial burdens,” said Rachel Ortiz, executive director of Barrio Station.

On San Diego is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to increase economic opportunity for all San Diegans. It focuses on expanding opportunities for local youths, increasing community engagement, empowering small businesses and entrepreneurs, and supporting the development of an educated and skilled 21st century workforce.
