The Republican Party should accept marriage equality and move on, a gay former GOP San Diego councilman and congressional candidate said Friday following the U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld same-sex marriage.
“Opposition to gay marriage has cost the Republican Party supporters — particularly among the younger generation,” Carl DeMaio said.
“This decision provides a reflection point for the Republican Party,” DeMaio said. “With today’s decision now the law of the land, I encourage leaders in the Republican Party to move on and embrace the Golden Rule of treating everyone with respect and dignity and standing for the simple notion that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.”
DeMaio served on the City Council from 2008-12. He lost elections for mayor three years ago and Congress last year.
He now co-hosts a radio program and works with The Performance Institute, a think tank he founded 15 years ago.
Another Republican, the straight and married San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, tweeted, “Every American deserves the right to marry. Today is a great day for equality, for our community and for our country. #MarriageEquality.”
