Deputy District Attorney Robert Hickey on Thursday joined the race to succeed San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith next year.
Hickey, who was named San Diego County Prosecutor of the Year in 2011 for his handling of a notorious gang-related double-murder case, has served as assistant chief for the gang and major narcotics units in the District Attorney’s Office.
“In my career in both public and private practice, I am most proud of taking criminals off the streets and bringing closure to the families of victims and the Southeast San Diego community,” Hickey said.
Hickey, who was endorsed by Sheriff Bill Gore, is the second declared candidate in the 2016 race, following Chief Deputy City Attorney Mara Elliott. She’s a top assistant for Goldsmith, who is being termed out. Elliott has also served as general counsel for community college and K-12 school districts, and has worked in the county counsel’s office.
Voters in San Diego in 2016 will also determine whether Kevin Faulconer continues as mayor, decide five City Council seats and weigh several ballot measures, including one on whether to raise the minimum wage above the state level.
