The 2016 elections are over a year away, but the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce said Thursday it will support Mayor Kevin Faulconer and County Supervisor Greg Cox in their re-election campaigns.

The influential business group is also endorsing San Diego City Council members Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman in their respective races.

The chamber’s board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the endorsements at its meeting Thursday after hearing from Faulconer, Kersey and Sherman. Cox is scheduled to address the board at a later meeting.

“For us, it’s simple: a healthy business environment means jobs for San Diegans and a thriving community,” said Jerry Sanders, president and CEO of the chamber.

“So we are looking to support candidates who share that vision and bring a collaborative spirit to city hall, where we can work as partners toward creating the right environment for businesses to succeed.”

The chamber said further endorsements are expected as candidates emerge and races develop. The next general election will be held June 7, 2016.

“We’re bringing San Diego back, and I’m proud to have the support of the regional chamber as we continue to make our city the best place to live, work and start a business,” Faulconer said.

The chamber is the largest local business group on the West Coast, representing more than 2,500 businesses and 300,000 jobs.
