The 2016 Congressional race is a long way off, but the first Republican challenger to two-term Rep. Scott Peters announced her candidacy Wednesday.
Jacquie Atkinson, a Marine Corps combat veteran and wounded warrior, said she will challenge Peters, a Democrat, in the 52nd Congressional District.
“I have served my country in combat and I am prepared to serve my country in Congress,” Atkinson said. “Whether it is wasting our money, failing to provide for our security or ignoring the struggles of working families, Congress is completely broken and career politician Scott Peters is the epitome of what is wrong with our Congress.”
Atkinson is currently a portfolio manager at the Defense Department’s Joint Improvised Explosives Device Defeat Organization, which sees to counteract improvised explosive devices in warfare.
The candidate will hold a campaign kickoff event April 16 at Heat Bar and Kitchen in North Park
