Longtime civic leader Stephen Cushman will be the next chairman of the San Diego Convention Center Corp. Board of Directors, the organization announced Thursday.

Cushman, who founded the Cush Auto Group, will succeed Nico Ferraro next month. He’s an adjunct professor of business at San Diego State University, where he is also chairman of the business school’s Board of Directors.

The convention center faces several challenges, including a proposed expansion that’s considered by tourism officials to be necessary to attract the largest trade shows to the facility — but is stalled by litigation over the financing mechanism. The existing structure is in need of a long list of capital projects and maintenance, including replacement of its iconic sails.

Rabbi Laurie Coskey, executive director of the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, will serve as vice chairwoman — putting her in line to chair the board in 2016.
