With 12 more ballots counted Wednesday in the Imperial Beach mayoral race, environmentalist Serge Dedina is still leading incumbent Jim Janney by a small margin, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Dedina received 2,194 votes to Janney’s 2,157, a difference of 37 votes. Less than one percentage point separates the two candidates.
Janney was leading on Election night by a small margin, since then Dedina has been inching up and finally surpassing Janney on Monday.
Dedina added to his lead by six votes with Wednesday’s count.
In the unlikely case of a tie, the Imperial Beach City Council will decide the winner, according to the California Election Code.
There are still approximately 14,000 absentee and provisional ballots to be counted, some of which may be for Imperial Beach.
