Republican challenger Carl DeMaio conceded Sunday to Democratic incumbent Scott Peters in the bitter race for the 52nd Congressional District.

DeMaio, who initially led the vote count after election day, had 48.8 percent of the vote to Peters’ 51.3 percent after provisional and mail-in votes were counted. Peters led by nearly 4,500 votes Sunday, with 10,000-15,000 more ballots remaining to be counted.

A difference of less than 1,000 votes separated the candidates on election day.
