Rep. Scott Peters picked up endorsements from the Sierra Club and the Humane Society this week in his campaign for re-election to Congress in the 52nd District.

The Humane Society Legislative Fund cited Peters for “strong leadership and advocacy on animal protection policies.”

“Scott Peters has been a leading champion of legislation to protect animals from cruelty and abuse and he is working to promote the values of kindness and compassion to all creatures,” said Sara Amundson, the group’s executive director.

The Humane Society Legislative Fund is the nation’s leading political advocacy group for animal welfare.

Sierra Club San Diego cited Peters’ work on a variety of environmental issues ranging from combating the impacts of climate change to increasing funding for wildfire preparedness, saying Peters “has spent his entire career protecting the environment.”

“I’m honored that the Sierra Club has recognized my persistent efforts on behalf of the environment both in San Diego and nationally,” Peters said. “I pledge to continue the important work of protecting San Diego’s precious natural resources and addressing the threat of climate change.

Peters faces former San Diego City Council member Carl DeMaio in the race for the 52nd District, which covers much of central San Diego County including Poway, Coronado and large portions of the City of San Diego.
