Attack advertising reached a new level in the 52nd District Congressional race with a national Republican political action committee accusing Rep. Scott Peters of inappropriate stock sales and the California Republican Party following with a request for an investigation.
The Peters campaign demanded Tuesday that local television stations cease airing the advertisement.
“This advertisement is patently false. For the sake of both FCC licensing requirements and the public interest, your station should immediately refuse to continue to air it,” the campaign said in letters to two San Diego stations.
The ad was placed by the National Republican Congressional Committee, a Washington-based political action committee that is seeking to increase the Republican majority in Congress.
After the ad first aired, the California Republican Party wrote to the Office of Congressional Ethics asking that the allegations in the ad be investigated.
Peters faces Carl DeMaio in an election that is considered one of the closest nationally and is attracting a high level of outside funding and advertising.
