A new survey finds that San Diego residents strongly favor keeping SeaWorld‘s summer fireworks, despite criticism by some that the nightly display scares animals and harms the environment.

The survey  found that 74 percent of San Diego County residents are in favor of keeping the fireworks, 15 percent are either moderately or strongly opposed and 11 percent said they weren’t sure. The results did not vary among respondents in the City of San Diego versus and South or North County.

The online survey questioned 375 residents between July 21 and July 24. Results were weighted by age, gender, income and county region, with the margin of survey error being +/- 5.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.

The survey was commissioned by WOC Intelligence, the new research arm of San Diego public relations firm (W)right On Communications.

SeaWorld’s summer fireworks go off at either 8:50 p.m. or 9:50 p.m., depending on the day.

Pt. Loma activist Alana Coons and others have called for banning the fireworks displays.
