The war in Iraq came to San Diego Monday as several hundred Kurdish-Americans rallied outside the federal building, seeking more American help for Kurdistan against a “savage assault” by radical Islamists.
Several hundred people lined Front Sreet in front of the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building. Some were dressed in Kurdish Peshmerga uniforms, and many waved Kurdish and American flags, and held up posters. Passing cars honked in support.
The rally was organized by the Kurdish Community Center in Southern California, which is based in Pasadena.
“The relatively stable and democratic Kurdistan Region is currently confronting a savage assault by the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), an al-Qaeda-inspired terrorist organization that brutally targets religious and ethnic minorities,” the center said in a press release handed to media.
President Obama on Friday ordered limited air strikes against ISIS to assist the Peshmerga. On Monday, the Peshmerga had recaptured several towns from ISIS.
