Former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, who is running as the Republican candidate for the House seat held by Democratic Rep. Scott Peters, picked up national exposure this past week in a magazine profile and video interview.
The National Journal, an influential online magazine, profiled DeMaio in an article Saturday titled “Yes, Carl DeMaio Is A Gay Republican.” The article recounted DeMaio’s personal childhood story, including his struggles as an orphan, which he rarely discusses.
The article described DeMaio as being defined by his conservatism. “‘Social issues’” in general, he contends, are a foolish distraction from the mammoth task of reforming government,” the article reported.
On Thursday, DeMaio was interviewed for the ABC News/Yahoo News Top Line program, and questioned about his candidacy and what it means for the future of the Republic Party.
“I believe that I reflect the traditional roots of the Republican Party…a party that traditionally supports economic freedom,” he said in the interview. “Can’t we get government out of our bedrooms and out of our private lives?”
Peters and DeMaio are running for election in the 52nd Congressional District, which includes Coronado, Poway, and much of the northern portion of the city of San Diego.
