The connector ramp from westbound Interstate 8 to northbound Interstate 5 will be closed Sunday night for construction, Caltrans announced.
The ramp will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday morning in order to re-stripe the lanes and place concrete barriers that will allow future construction to take place, Caltrans’ Cathryne Bruce-Johnson said.
Caltrans officials asked motorists to use caution on the ramp Monday morning as it will look different than what they are accustomed to seeing.
Detour signs will be present tonight and early Monday morning to direct motorists trying to connect from westbound I-8 to northbound I-5, Bruce-Johnson said.
The construction on the ramp is the start of a two year, $24 million project to improve safety and reduce traffic delays in the area. The project will add a second lane on the bridge from westbound 8 at to northbound 5, and add a northbound lane and auxiliary lane on northbound 5 across the San Diego River and north to Sea World Drive.
