President Barack Obama is seeking $216 million in funding for the next phase of construction on the San Ysidro border crossing, reports NBCSanDiego.com.
Congress must review and approve the item, contained within the president’s $3.9 trillion budget proposal.
NBC San Diego reports members of the local congressional delegation, from senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein to the five representatives, are committed to ensuring the funding is approved for the crowded border crossing.
The port of entry is the busiest in the world, officials say, and plans have long been in place to ease travel between San Diego to Tijuana.
