Times of San Diego ended its second calendar year of publication with a record 2.34 million people visiting the increasingly popular local news website.
The 2015 audience compared to 1.24 million readers — “unique users” in Internet terminology — in 2014, during which the site was published for 9 1/2 months.
December readership of 169,000 was 34 percent higher than the readership in December of 2014.
The year’s last month saw the following audience trends:
- More than two-thirds of the site’s audience was under the age of 55, the reverse of newspapers and broadcast TV. The largest audience segment was aged 25-34 and accounted for 22 percent of readership.
- A record 59 percent of the audience used smartphones or tablets. The site employs responsive design to automatically format for different devices.
- 40 percent of readers lived in San Diego County, and another 15 percent elsewhere in Southern California. Because San Diego often makes national news, a good portion of the audience is national and even international.
- Subscribers to the free, daily email newsletter reached 2,300. Between 5 and 10 people are signing up every day.
Times of San Diego publishes 20 to 25 articles daily covering essential news in San Diego County. The staff numbers seven contributing editors and photographers.
The site is free to the public and supported by advertising and reader contributions.
