Closing La Jolla Cove | Town Council and Coastal Commission weigh ‘What access looks like’
Nearly 100 more people showed up than chairs set out in anticipation for last Thursday’s La Jolla Town Council meeting over ongoing issues between humans and sea lions at La Jolla Cove. If you haven’t caught on yet, San Diegans love both sea lions and beach access.
The packed meeting was over the perpetual debate about closing La Jolla Cove access to the public. Those for and against the closure were both well represented, and things got heated.
Some community members have demanded a total closure of the cove, while others argue swimmers should maintain access but with increased city enforcement of any human harassment of the pups.
That same day, the California Coastal Commission determined swimmers should still be able to use the cove, but “most visitors” should be restricted to observing from above.
Brian Elliot, a representative for Council President Joe LaCava who attended the meeting, said the debate is now progressing to determine different options that would balance maintained access with additional control. The local nonprofit group La Jolla Parks and Beaches has said access should be limited to those actively using the water.
LaCava’s office is seeking additional feedback and opinions from residents and community groups.
