Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
A few weeks ago, the Ocean Beach Planning Board introduced five proposals for submission in their capital improvement project requests this year. The planning board invited OBceans to include their say in the matter and vote at the street fair for the new CIP requests.
Among the requests were turning Newport Avenue into a pedestrian promenade, repainting curbs in compliance with daylighting laws, installing a roundabout at Abbott and Cable Street, making Bacon Street a one-way road and a new recreation center.
Due to a lack of interest, the planning board left most of the new proposals off the list but added repainting the curbs, instead they prioritized bigger projects among the options like a new recreation center and lifeguard tower.
There was public interest in the Newport Avenue promenade but the board felt the project was too big to be introduced this time and opted to wait for more studies to be conducted. As proposed, the promenade would prohibit traffic on Newport Avenue to create a safer space for pedestrians. Whether it’s the same block that closes every Wednesday for the farmer’s market or if it should stretch to the ocean is still in discussion.
Another repeated CIP request was stormwater and drainage improvements, especially around Sunset Cliffs. As I have mentioned in past newsletters, most of the erosion to the cliffs is due to poor runoff systems. To me, the cliffs are as big of a draw as the pier or Newport Avenue, so fixing them should be a high priority.
It comes as no surprise to see one project at the top of the list — the OB Pier replacement. Funding for the new pier is still up in the air and as time passes, its condition only worsens. Its neglect is clearly hurting the community and like many OBceans, I am eager to see the project move forward. Like I said, funding remains the largest barrier for this project, as the city is strapped for cash. It seems likely the estimated nearly $190 million to rebuild the local landmark will need to come from another source.
