Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
I was riding my bike along the Sunset Cliffs the other day and I couldnβt help but notice the sections of the cliffs closed off to visitors β most notably the large section between Adair Street and Osprey Street near the Sunset Cliffs sign.
It seems like most people opt to ignore the signs, walking around and under the caution tape to get a closer look at eroding cliffs and the crashing ocean below. On top of that, the pedestrian walking area is pretty much diverted to the bike lane, which makes the already congested Sunset Cliffs Boulevard an even bigger headache for all parties, with bikes moving into the road.
As I rode my bike back to my house, I honestly couldnβt think back to when the paths were fully functional. The city has offered a few different options. In May, they revealed a $32 million seawall project in an effort to reduce erosion to the cliffs.
The seawall would protect against coastal erosion even though most of the erosion can be attributed to runoff. Construction for the seawall could start in late winter 2027, with time allocated for permit acquisition and funding expected to take 20 months.
The city has a Coastal Resilience Master Plan, which includes drainage improvements along Sunset Cliffs to account for runoff erosion. All this comes at a cost though, as the city has proposed making the section of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard after Monaco Street a one-way road. However, this could also open up more space for pedestrians.
The cliffs are a crown jewel of not only our community, but of San Diego as well. Like the rest of OB, I want to see improvements to the current situation, but also want it to be carefully considered how it will affect traffic and the natural beauty of the cliffs.
