Chicano Park Museum exhibit spotlights lowrider bikes and culture
When it comes to lowriders, cars get most of the attention. The bikes, on the other hand, are getting a well-deserved shot at the spotlight with a new exhibition at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.
“Chrome and Candy Dreams: A Rite of Passage” celebrates lowrider bikes as an art form while inspiring a new generation with the creative possibilities they present, as our Roman Aguilar writes in a new feature.
Curators Norman Paraiso, Juan “Wicho” Flores and Ariana Arroyo, told Aguilar, they chose longtime lowrider clubs from across the region because they wanted to show the deep roots of the art — and to give a nod to those who formed it.
Some of these bikes were passed down through families.
The hope is that young folks without exposure to the bikes can see what is possible. Moreover, that they can recognize those with similar passions for style and art, which could lead to fostering friendships and community.
All of that is to say: it’s much bigger than bikes.
