Trump order puts wolf protections — and Julian’s California Wolf Center expansion — in spotlight
The Trump administration has had an impact on many San Diegans. Immigrants (we wrote about one this week whose restaurant closed months after he was deported), service members, researchers and aid recipients, to name a few.
Another group to add to that list: conservation experts. In this case, those who watch over threatened wolves.
The California Wolf Center, which happens to be in our backyard, in Julian, has been part of the movement to protect the animals, particularly gray wolves, which have been listed as endangered since a 2022 court order.
Gray wolves have bounced back, but it’s not a done deal. As the center states on its website, “at this time wolf recovery remains fragile. Expanding development, habitat fragmentation, climate change and increasing human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten the future of wolves and other native apex predators.”
That’s why those at the center are hyper-aware of another executive order issued by Trump, this time seeking a new look at the endangered status of wolves. But the change can’t happen based on his signature alone.

🌊 While El Niño is expected to arrive this winter, the funky sea critters following the warm water currents have already landed on the California coast. For the first time in recorded history, a sea turtle laid eggs on the West Coast, just up the 5 via the 405 in Seal Beach. (NY Times)
🦈 Momma turtles aren’t the only newcomers to the coast from the warmer El Niño waters; beachgoers in Newport Beach discovered a venomous yellow-bellied sea snake on the beach. The warmer waters are also bringing in hammerhead sharks and whale sharks. (LA Times)
