Spirit of Stonewall Rally moves to new location with ‘Pose’ actress as keynote speaker
You may have noticed that Times of San Diego has run several profiles of local LGBTQ+ leaders and community organizations over the last few weeks.
A few were artists and advocates we wanted to draw attention to, like asexual and aromantic San Diegans marching in the Pride Parade for the fifth time ever or Pride’s new executive director KishaLynn Elliott, who promises stability after years of tumult at the philanthropic organization.
Most, however, were selected by San Diego Pride itself as this year’s cohort of Spirit of Stonewall award winners. Our team of interns met each of these award winners to learn about their impact on the LGBTQ+ community and interview them about how they are meeting this moment.
Some are facing off the federal government’s attacks on civil rights in courtrooms, behind a camera lens, in a med school classroom or on church pews.
They will all be honored at a rally next Friday evening, taking place not at the Pride flagpole like usual but across Hillcrest near the Brass Rail amid Normal Street Promenade construction. We have details on this year’s keynote speakers, including a former “Pose” star and a fellow nonbinary San Diego journalist talking about the importance of a free press, in our top story.
For a roundup of all our Pride coverage, including the many inspirational leaders in our community, pick up a copy of the Pride Guide – which has helpful information like the parade route and festival music schedule – or find the stories included here online.
