Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
If you haven’t noticed the banner draped across Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, The 79th Ocean Beach Kite Festival is this Saturday, May 16, at Robb Field. The event is put on by the Ocean Beach Kiwanis Club from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It’s totally free, and even if you don’t have a kite, there’s a spot where you can build your own! There are also professional kite flyers so you can admire the intricate kites in the Ocean Beach sky as well. The event was started in 1948 by the Kiwanis Club to teach kids how to make and fly their own kites and is touted as the second-oldest kite festival continuously celebrated in the U.S.
In my time living on OB, I tended to just drive by the kite festival because I didn’t have a kite or just thought I was too old for the event. But last year I decided to go after a group of friends invited me.
It was a gloomy day and just a week after I graduated from college, which brought on a lot of change. I didn’t bring a kite but was directed to the area where you could make your own. My friend and I drew funny faces on our kites, and they took flight shortly after.
As the wind picked up the more string we would release from our handles, and the higher the kite would fly. Although mostly kids participated in the event, my friends and I laughed and tried to outdo each other’s kites, going higher with each gust. In that stressful life moment, it was the perfect opportunity to relax at the park and smile with my friends.
So no matter your age, I would highly recommend going to the Kite Festival. We all need to be kids here and there.
