Today’s newsletter is presented by Evinco.
Hello, Uptown!
We’re lucky to have Balboa Park in our backyard. While all of San Diego gets to enjoy the space, it’s particularly nice to be able to talk a long walk and find yourself on the outskirts, whether you’re in Hillcrest, Bankers Hill or North Park.
If you saw this morning’s daily newsletter you might be tuned in to the fact that the city is looking to draw up an updated Master Plan for Balboa Park. It’s been several decades since the plans have been touched and they are in dire need of a refresh. A lot has changed since the 80s.
San Diegans from across the city will have the opportunity to give their two cents on how the city should plan to maintain the park for the next three decades.
For us in Uptown, this could mean how the areas that border our respective neighborhoods are maintained or developed to match each’s needs.
“The west side of Balboa Park is an area that currently has none of those kinds of facilities—no athletic fields, no big recreation center,” Andy Field, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, said. “So it’ll be very interesting to see what the community today is looking for, especially as we’ve seen such changes as, for example, the Uptown community has seen extensive residential development.”
Field here, makes a good point. As we’ve had more neighbors move into Uptown, there’s a greater need for more facilities or green space — depending on which you would prefer.
City council won’t adopt the plan until 2028, so this is just the beginning of the process. However, you’ll only have the next three weeks to make your voice heard. Take the city’s survey here.
