Hello, Uptown!

The Normal Heights area is undergoing something of a transformation. Since I moved to this neighborhood (mumble) years ago, a lot of interesting new businesses have opened their doors, like the extraordinary art secondhand shop Art FORM San Diego and cacao cafe Maya Moon, a frequent haunt of mine.

Now there’s another one. Last week’s Big Hole in Ground has given way to something even more exciting. It turns out that bad boy was right by the brand-new MAKE Cafe, which has popped up at 4712 Felton St. (that’s on the other side of the big Normal Heights sign from Maya Moon, for anyone who might be interested) and just celebrated its grand opening over the weekend.

MAKE stands for Merging Agriculture, Kitchens and Employment, but that’s not the whole reason this little cafe’s presence is exciting to me. It’s also a place for immigrant and refugee women to receive on-the-job training. Some people arrive in the United States with little to no formal job training or experience, so MAKE Cafe was established to offer a paid 185-hour, 12-week job training program.

This program is an extension of MAKE Projects, which includes a local farm. That means that if you want to get some of the freshest and most interesting global cuisine anywhere, Normal Heights is one of the best places to be — and it’s all for the best possible cause.

If you see me, say hello – and if I’m not there, now you know where else to look.
