Today’s newsletter is presented by the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association.
Good morning, San Diego.
We’re opening with a sad story about a young person in a coma after he was struck by a car in a freak accident during a surfing trip. 20-year-old Dakota Briley, son of Pipeline surf icon Shawn Briley, is recovering in a hospital in Hawaii. But the surfing community has rallied in the family’s support, with a GoFundMe already raising almost $230,000 for Dakota’s treatment and long recovery.
Budgets are also big news for the region. San Diego County unanimously passed an $8.63 billion budget, a much smoother process than the City of San Diego’s back-and-forth, and don’t miss our sports features today as San Diego continues to make its mark on and off the fútbol fields.
Last but certainly not least, meet our summer intern reporters! They have already been gracing us with extraordinary work, so keep an eye out for their bylines and say hello if you get a chance. The future is bright, or at least filled with well-written articles, with journalists like them coming into the field.
