Hello, Downtown!
In a country that’s 250 years old, within a company that’s 40, a 10-year anniversary might not seem like a big deal. It is to downtown San Diego dining fans who’ve made Barbusa one of the most popular eateries in Little Italy.
Barbusa is my go-to. A few years ago, I tried a new restaurant for a family occasion. Once seated, we didn’t love the vibe or the menu. We were perplexed about making a quick exit. Someone suggested the Italian eatery blocks away. That settled it. I made up an excuse to our server and we made a beeline to Barbusa.
Since Barbusa added lunch service last year, it’s the first place I suggest when people ask for a recommendation. Pizzas and pastas are legit. Don’t miss out on the Polipo Puttanesca (squid-ink spaghetti with octopus).
Barbusa is part of the Busalacchi dynasty of restaurants. There’ve been 14 eateries under the family name since 1984. Four are currently in Little Italy along India Street, including Nonna, Lala, Cafe Zucchero and Barbusa.
Joe Busalacchi is the patriarch. His son Michael says there are more than 50 family members in San Diego and more than half have worked in a Busalacchi restaurant. Michael and his brothers Joey and P.J. opened Barbusa in 2016.
Barbusa represents a modern evolution of the family’s culinary roots. It blends traditional Sicilian dishes with a trendy, high-energy dining experience. Servers are knowledgeable, friendly and often laugh-aloud funny.
Want a behind-the-scenes glimpse into restaurants? After you binge The Bear on Hulu, check out Michael Busalacchi’s series of real-life-inspired comedy vignettes. I recommend “The Fussy Influencer,” “The Hostess Stand Hanger-On,” and “The Couple Who Just Had To Meet A Real-Life Nonna.”
