Just think about it: The shifting sands of a day at the beach
It may not be true, but it sure seems like it. So forgive me for thinking: Government really is out to kill fun.
Ever been buried in sand on the beach? If you grew up anywhere along the coast, or had the privilege to visit, you have spent time on the sand dumping buckets of it on someone or having buckets of it dumped on you.
But in Del Mar, that’s a thing of the past. The city council has decreed that there shall be no burying of people on its fair sands.
Is Del Mar particularly persnickety? It turns out, no, according to contributor Ron Donoho. There are similar mandates in Imperial Beach, and just to our north, in Newport, Laguna and Huntington beaches in Orange County.
Granted, some beach digging is still allowed, but the holes must be no more than two feet deep. So are Del Mar and other cities interfering with harmless fun or taking reasonable precautions because beach-goers are engaging in riskier activities?
While you decide, I’m gonna go get someone to bury me in sand in OB before San Diego passes a law too.
