Appellate court strikes down 3,008-home Fanita Ranch development in Santee

The arguments over housing never end in San Diego County. It costs too much. There’s not enough of it. Should we build up or allow sprawl? Will a project hurt the environment? Will it disturb residents who are already there?

Fanita Ranch checked most of those boxes, argument-wise. But the curtain appears to have fallen on the massive Santee project after a court on Thursday denied an appeal by the developer behind it.

The plan, for thousands of homes, dates back several years, and the city was on board. Many Santee residents, though, were unhappy, and fought back – environmentalists too. After various maneuvers on both sides, the city approved the plan, leading to the lawsuit.

The appellate court was firm in its ruling, rejecting most of the developer’s arguments in the case. The legal battle could continue, but that would require another appeal, this time to the state Supreme Court. Our Dorian Hargrove has more on the legal fate of the 2,638-acre Fanita Ranch proposal.
