San Diego congressional Democrats vow legislation to block NAVWAR data center

A large part of the conversation around the idea for a data center on the site of the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) is the fact of the city of San Diego having no say in the matter because it sits on federal land.

Four of San Diego’s Democratic congressional representatives are trying to do something about that.

This comes just after local officials passed a temporary moratorium on data centers across the city. But, like I mentioned, that doesn’t have any affect on what’s being considered at NAVWAR.

Reps. Sara Jacobs, Scott Peters, Juan Vargas and Mike Levin have announced they will be proposing legislation to stop the data center from moving into Point Loma. The legislation will be on hold though until the House returns on Nov. 9. Even then, it might face some challenges in gaining momentum with limited time on the congressional calendar.

This idea for NAVWAR is part of a larger strategy being pushed by the Trump administration to put data centers on federal land and military sites, which means that other cities across the country could soon be facing a similar dilemma.
