Good morning, San Diego.

Tessa Balc, Audience Engagement Producer

As the thumbs behind Times of San Diego’s social medias, I’ll occasionally scrolling through our Instagram’s reels tab to see what other San Diegans are up to. A couple of weeks ago I, along with many other folks, stumbled across local influencer Scott Muirhead’s video advertising a remote work meet-up in Pacific Beach. I had reached it after it had occurred, so I went to his profile and saw video from the actual meet-up.

The scene alone is one of those that’s so San Diego moments. And what came next could just as well fall into that same category.

Some might call it a pattern after similar showdowns of the city versus DJs and yoga instructors. Others might call it diligent work on the city’s part to enforce policy. Either way, the meet-ups will need a permit going forward.

But the city isn’t requiring that Muirhead get permits for his next gathering solely because of a viral video — apparently there were some complaints over the PB meetup. Namely that some folks stayed, partook in after-hours beverages and made a mess.

Moral of the story: Don’t get too popular (bring 50 people together) in San Diego or else you’ll need to get the city in on that action.

Plus: The latest episode of the San Diego Politics Show broke down how the civil war within the local GOP is playing out in the county’s District 5 race, where Democrats are trying to take win a supermajority on the Board of Supervisors. Local political consultant Mason Herron joined to provide insight on the race. Check it out.

Opinion: The value of arts funding goes far beyond its economic impact

San Diego is not just beaches, strip malls, tacos and craft beer. It’s a city with immense cultural value that should be available to as many as possible.
