City launches enforcement crackdown to clean up Central Library encampments, drug activity
The next two weeks are important for East Village – the area around the Central Library in particular.
That’s because police and the local business district are in the midst of an operation to try and make the area more hospitable for library patrons and nearby residents.
Lots of people probably would be both except for the conditions around the library, which has been open since 2013.
The library, lauded for its distinctive dome design when it opened, now faces trouble within and without.
The “significant issues” around its Park Boulevard home include nearby homeless encampments and the discarded drug paraphernalia and worse, human waste, that often result when people live on the streets.
But there are problems inside too and librarians, known for their assistance to patrons, have had to turn punitive, issuing suspensions to those who loiter, brazenly break library rules, or worse, pose an actual threat. The situation is even more sensitive because there’s a school that operates out of the library.
The big date: Sept. 18. That’s when the city will evaluate the short-term results of the early-morning effort to have police clear encampments. Our Dorian Hargrove has more – he details residents’ concerns and the strain being placed on library staff.
