While this newsletter covers the Pacific and Mission Beach areas, Wayfarer Bread & Pastry is worth the 10-minute drive through North PB. As a seasoned regular and self-proclaimed bread connoisseur, I can’t help but promote it. Not only is Wayfarer a local favorite, it’s been named one of the 100 Best Bakeries in America by Food & Wine magazine.
Wayfarer Bread opened in 2018 on La Jolla Boulevard in Bird Rock. This female-founded bakery is known for exceptional sourdough, naturally fermented breads, French-inspired pastries and a rotating selection of seasonal ingredients.
If you stop in, I’d recommend the jalapeño cheese croissant and a salted chocolate chip cookie. Grab a baguette and a sleeve of English muffins to take home. And don’t sleep on the sandwiches: offering one meat and one vegetarian sandwich each week, the menu is always changing and always enticing. On weekends, Wayfarer also turns out exceptional pizzas on a monthly rotating menu built around what’s in season.
There’s nothing quite like walking your haul down the hill to Calumet Park for a picnic over the ocean. The community that’s taken root in this corner of the neighborhood is one of the most wholesome and grounded experiences I’ve found in San Diego.
At the risk of making the lines outside even longer, Wayfarer is a must-visit. At least the wait means this neighborhood staple is getting the attention it deserves.
