Military personnel safely removed an apparent military artillery shell found Tuesday in a neighborhood north of Del Mar Mesa Preserve, authorities said.

A 911 caller informed the San Diego Police Department about the discovery in the 7200 block of Arroyo Grande Road in Torrey Santa Fe shortly before 9:30 a.m., Sgt. Saum Poorsaleh said.

After consulting with police and reviewing photos that officers took of the object, ordnance-handling technicians from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the FBI and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar went to Arroyo Grande Road to investigate, a department captain, Jason Shanley said.

“Multiple X-rays were conducted, and the item appeared to be an artillery round with no fuse present and no immediate concerns identified,” the fire captain said. “Miramar (crew members) took possession of the ordnance for further identification and disposal.”

The object, the origin of which was unclear, was removed from the area by 11:40 a.m., according to Shanley.
